Poponi Beach Cottage is an efficiency apartment on the crest of an ancient sand dune directly behind the historic Poponi residence.

The original house was built by a quirky retired British military officer, Captain Meade, more than 50 years ago. Some of the older locals still tell wry stories about the Cap'n and his wife, a faded-glory former stage actress. The property, which comprises more than two acres of lush, manicured Caribbean foliage, is on Banks Road, just at the edge of the settlement of North Palmetto Point, near the Unique Village grounds.

The deep sandy beach is just a casual stroll through the yard – no Tarzan ropes or 30-foot stairwells. And once you’ve curled up in the cabana or a hammock under the Casuarina pines, you’ll never want to move. (This explains why some of our renovations took a year or two longer than planned.)

You might see an occasional beachcomber or a couple of day-trippers, but most of the time you’ll have the sands to yourselves. Unfortunately, nobody will pester you to buy a coconut or hair braids. Oh, darn. We’re so-o-o-o sorry about that.

Poponi is close to the island’s favorite restaurants. Tippy’s, La DolceVita, Mate &Jenny’s, Banks Road Deli, Sunset Inn and Pina Café are all within 10 minutes or less. Unique Village and Joe’s Beachside are practically neighbors. “North Point” has 3 or 4 small groceries that are great for basics and fresh fruits and veggies. Two larger groceries and three liquor stores are just 10 minutes down the road in Governor’s Harbour. The cottage is 20 minutes south of the Governor’s Harbour airport (recommended), 50 minutes south of North Eleuthera Airport (Harbour Island), and 40 minutes north of Rock Sound Airport.
